Since I became Vegan in December 2017, I've been searching for food to fall in love with again. It's not realistic to come from a meat & dairy based diet straight into a whole food, plant based diet and not expect to miss certain tastes. Yes, I do feel oh-so-healthy, but I've been eating the same meals at home as I'm not a very adventurous cook. (I'm working on changing this!) Eating at non-vegan restaurants is a means to an end. You always have to 'make do' with what they give you. I've found some of the very top restaurants in Dubai have given me very plain and boring food, which I could have made better at home. I wish chefs would put as much effort into their vegan choices as they do for the rest of their menu. But times are slowly changing, and as more people turn vegan, the more choices we will get.
In my exploration of Vegan restaurants in Dubai, I came across Life N One. Their cuisine is not only vegan, but gluten free, sugar free, soy free AND GMO free. They strive to make delicious and wholesome food that is nourishing for your body. This little gem is hidden in the heart of Jumeirah 1. You really don't expect the magical garden amongst the busy streets. From the moment you walk through the gates, you notice all the special touches. The decor and quotes make you smile. The rustic, earthy furniture and grass under your feet make you feel like you're at home. My partner and I were fostering a dog a few weeks ago and we took her there to have lunch with us. Yes, the restaurant is dog friendly too! Another HUGE plus in my eyes. My partner had the Chickpea Omelette which he loved, and I had the Vegan burger which was super tasty. I personally still prefer wholewheat buns opposed to gluten free buns as it feels more like a burger to me, although the bread that the restaurant makes in house is much healthier for you. We finished off by sharing the Snickers Pie which is out of this world delicious. Rich and satisfying, it will fulfill all your cravings for something sweet. I also love that there is free Infused Water in a glass water dispenser available which you can help yourself too. I think every restaurant in Dubai should offer this, and we can cut back on the tons of one time plastic usage created every day.
I went back to Life N One the other day to try some of the items that have just been launched on the new menu. Kiki, the head chef, has been a vegan chef for 6 years. She's from Venezuela and has added some touches from her home country in some of the dishes. She's uber sweet and you can tell every dish is prepared with love.
Here are the 3 dishes that Kiki made for me to try:
Aubergine rolls filling with vegan mozzarella, roasted peanuts and pickles bell peppers.
My opinion - delicious. So tasty, and the vegan mozzarella is so yummy you won't even realize that it's not real cheese. You can't go wrong with this dish.
Tapioca Arepas (Arepas is a typical dish from Venezuela) filling with guasacaca (avocado, parsley and green bell pepper) vegan cheese, sprouts, tomato and mix greens
My opinion - It's very different. It was nice to try something I wouldn't have usually ordered.
Mexican nori wraps - salsa, avocado, sour cream, mongo beans sprouts, baby lettuce and quinoa
My opinion - My favorite of the 3 dishes. Absolutely delicious! It's possibly because I love sushi, and now that I can't have salmon sushi anymore, this dish feels just as satisfying for me. It's filling, tasty and I love all the fresh avo served with it. I would most definitely order this again on my next visit.
If you haven't tried out Life N One yet, I suggest that you give it a go. Take a book, and go read in the garden and enjoy some quiet time. They offer Yoga, Meditation and Pilates classes too, and always have events happening. Check out their website here: http://www.lifenone.com
I will definitely be back again soon.
Much love to Eda the owner and Kiki, and the rest of the team. Thank you for spreading the Vegan message and creating such a beautiful place for us to enjoy.
To our health and happiness,
